Our featured artist this month is Stewart Gray! Stewart uses a technique called Batik to create beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Stewart is originally from Richmond, VA that now lives in Fells Point, MD. He has an art degree from Elon University. Artist Chaz Winkler from the Outer Banks describes his work as “An urban batik artist utilizing reactive cold dyes manipulated by accommodation of waxes.” Artistic inspirations come from fellow artist Darryl Starr, Nick Cossitt, Loring Cornish, Stewart White, Trista Chapman, Todd Harringtoartworkandy Fox art work.
Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to the whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique originated in Indonesia. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. The applied wax resists dyes and therefore allow the artisan to color selectively by soaking the cloth in one color, removing the wax with boiling water. The technique will be done several times to get multiple colors and interesting patterns.
