In counseling, Justin holds the belief that it is important for families to work together as they grow together by means of mindful and creative expression involvement. That the importance of the relationship must be the crux of the significance of therapy.
Working in the field in excess of 15 years, Justin came to this profession via his Master’s in Counseling and Psychology from Mississippi College. His credentials include Licensed Professional Counselor and CSOTP. His career has included being a trauma-informed therapist who incorporates an eclectic approach geared toward the needs of each client.
His journey to Virginia began in 2007 where he gained knowledge of family systems while practicing as an in-home counselor. During this time, Justin gained a substantial knowledge base about trauma and its effects on the brain and body. The concerns he encountered seeing this population, youth, individuals, and family, covered a wide variety of issues including aggression, anger, depression, and anxiety.
Justin specializes in helping youth, adolescents, and adults in healing from trauma whether it be a major or minor trauma. Justin also specializes in working with youth with sexual behaviors. Trained and comfortable with multiple theoretical techniques he regularly utilizes Reality Therapy, Solution Focused and Brief Therapy and Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavior Therapy in his counseling practice. For couples, he often adds the Gottman Method.
Justin utilizes mindfulness techniques in all of his therapies and teaches this to all of his clients as well as the individuals that he supervises. Justin teaches his clients and their parents about meditative techniques, relaxation skills, and body awareness so that they can be aware not only of themselves but also those who they interact with. This is a good way to also increase an individual’s empathy and thus help in the healing process.
